Again, I wish people would check their facts…
they use 12 gram co2 cartriages for filling bike tires.
12 gram size cartirages are available with co2 and N2O in them. The nitrous oxide ones are for making whipped cream.
A slightly smaller cartriage is available that has 1800psi N2 in them as well.
Paintball guns are run on compressed air. Which is between 75 and 90% n2. Generally speaking. they are sometimes filled from industrial n2 as well, which is 100% nitrogen.
CO2 tanks are rated for 1800psi. Their burst disks are also set for that pressure.
N2O tanks are rated for 1200psi. And their burst disks (and the weight of the tank) reflects this.
When you puncture a co2 or n2o tank the pressure imediately disapates. This is because the actuall volume of gas in the tank is small. The pressure is generated by the vapor pressure of the liquid inside the tank. In the case of a co2 tank, if you remove all the pressure very quickly, all the liquid co2 turns into dry ice. Nitrous will also form snow. As for “blowing up” a full nitrous or co2 tank… it doesn’t worry me much. They are usualy aluminum, so don’t fragment, and the pressure drops off so severely when punctured that it’s really a non-issue. You can’t get enough heat into the liquid quickly enough to keep the pressures high.
Compressed air tanks. (nitrogen tanks) for paintball are available in 1800, 3000, 4500, and 5000psi ratings. Now the problem with compressed air, is that it’s energy isn’t stored in a liquid. It is already a gas, so when pressure is removed from it, it will violently expand. Causing blown up cars, garages, people…. Storing gases in a non liquid form is a very dangerous proposition.
