Removing Gila Exhaust Studs

So I want to replace the gila exhaust studs with socket headed bolts because when I try to put nuts on the studs the nuts can’t rotate due to hitting the pipe. But these studs seem to be attached via some black magic. Looks like an anchor of some kind they are screwed into? I tried welding a nut on the end of a stud and a bit of belabored turning the weld broke and I saw that all I did was bend the stud a little. Whats the deal?

i agree with ed if your going to replace the studs with bolts go allen… did you just tack weld the nut on or did you get serious with it? id say maybe try and go a little heavier on the weld…. on my metra 80 i had to cut the studs off flush with the cylinder and then drill new holes…. it was pretty sketchy but if all else fails it is an option….

Weld better? you may have to use a dremel and then tap it. There’s a thread where a dude did this for on metrakit.

Ed is right. do not use a hex head bolt they are pretty weak. A black allen head stove bolt is the best.

Socket headed cap screw / bolt is another way of saying allen head bolt. The “socket” refers to the hex indentation in it.

Anyway the problem with welding better is that the stud was not budging in the hole but just bending. I am afraid a better weld will just allow me to break the stud in half.

What I ended up doing was just using the studs, by squishing the pipe slightly in a vise to give some clearance.

Socket cap screw is the proper name for the fastener. It’s what you see at the hardware store, for example.

from wikipedia under screw:

Socket cap screw
Also known as a socket head cap screw, socket screw or Allen bolt, this is a type of cap screw with a hexagonal recessed drive. The most common types in use have a cylindrical head whose diameter is nominally 1.5 times (1960 series design) that of the screw shank (major) diameter. Counterbored holes in parts allow the screw head to be flush with the surface or recessed. Other head designs include button head and flat head, the latter designed to be seated into countersunk holes. A hex key (sometimes referred to as an Allen wrench or Allen key) or hex driver is required to tighten or loosen a socket screw. Socket screws are commonly used in assemblies that do not provide sufficient clearance for a conventional wrench or socket.

Those studs don’t come out. They are like splined and pressed into the cylinder like the metra 80’s. I use those treats long brass dealies. I ground the wall of them a little thinner than normal.

bolts are a bad idea, they are way more prone to stripping out w/ vibrations.
