OK… I have a tomos lx 2003 and i have a crap load of stuff on it….shaved manifold, 70cc, biturbo, carb, intake, airfilter, sproket, and I have done a little tweaking. My moped can hit 50 and hit the pin with a slight incline. Now i was talkin to this kid from moped army and he was sayin he weighs 150, 20lbs less than me only has the biturbo and 70cc and he has hit 70mph. When I heard this I said wtf a tomos cant handle that speed yet he swears by it. Now is it just me or is this a bunch of BS. RESPOND WITH WHAT YOU GOT AND WHAT UR TOP SPEED ON FLAT IS!!!!

I don’t know that this will be very helpful, however:

Stock 83 bullet.
Just ran alonside friends car and was consistently at 31 mph (flat). The speedo sucks and acts more like a VU meter than anything else…useless.
Ran downhill earlier and buried the needle just beyond 40mph, haven’t yet ran alongside car.
I weigh 140. And wind was not a factor today.

Ok Matt now how much you weigh…I weigh 170 and stock my moped did maybe 35 on flat thats if it was completely warmed up…Now the speed kit and biturbo only add about max 10 mph total complete together…The speed kit only adds maybe 5mph not even it is mostly used for torque…Now going down hill you can hit to the pin with even a stock moped so unless you have airfilters, intakes, carbs, and a performance sproket there is no way you will be able to break 50 on a moped on flat ground.

70 isn’t possible. The kid is probably looking at his TOMOS speedo which can be off by as much as 20 mph. 50-55 sounds more reasonable with that setup. Also, you can’t hit 70 really anyway since the tires are only rated up to 62 mph.

No, no. The speed kit is NOT used for torque. It’s used for hp. Why? A kit makes your bore larger rather than your stroke. Increaseing the bore=hp while increaseing the stroke=torque. Your speed kit though should add around 10 mph while the Bi Turbo is 5.

Re: Enter you tomos speed here please respond!!!

I am probably approching 50mph, flat out, on the flats, no wind. But that is when the temprature is in the high 50s. In warmer weather probably about 44 to 46mph.

Airsail kit, stock sproket, stock carb rejetted, biturbo pipe, and 200pound rider. (Well that is what I weight when I am all bundled up to ride and wearing my helmet.)

No moped is going to hit 70mph period. Unless of course you drop it out of an airplane… The transmissions just aren’t built for that much speed. I’ve ridden a Derbi Scooter with a 70cc kit and pipe that I got up to 75mph. But good twist and go 50cc scooters have a whole different level of engine technology then a moped.

1995 Tomos Targa Stepthru.

-70cc Airsal Kit.
-Dellorto 15/15L Carburetor with included intake and #60 Jet.
-Slightly shaved exhaust port.
-Tecno Circuit exhaust, slightly modded.
-Bored to 15.2mm straight intake manifold. (1992-1995 models)
-Machined cylendar head.
-26/22 sprocket configuration. (soon to change)

Depending on humidity and wind, weighing 160lbs., at normal temperature with calm winds the bike will run about 52mph on flat land if humidity is a little high and the outside temperature is lower than usual, I can get a little over 55mph.

Hope this helps.

70 mph is BS since all the parts on the moped cannot handle that much speed and for the modifications done, is not even achievable unless you go down a 45 degree hill. I know I can go about 50 since I tested my speedo w/ the police radar trailers they put on roads that tell you how fat you’re going. Mine was 1-2 mph off which is pretty good.

dude I have an 03 tomos sprint that does 35mph all stock. I weigh 120lbs. I plan to get the raptor kit from Ikes bikes. I have heard good reviews about it and the pipe you get is sweet looking. I emailed the owners of the kit in slovenia and they said I should hit a steady 55 with their kit. That is with stock sprokets to. So I am geting 27 tooth front sproket and I think I will be going fast. Cheak out www.mopedkit.com

Re: My big top speed

I heard that the Raptorkit is in general, very close to an Airsal kit and the Airsal kit gives the same performance, but you must give it more miles to break in. We installed a Raptorkit on a friend’s bike and it can’t keep up with an Airsal kit. I think the Raptorkit just has a quicker rev, to make it seem faster than an Airsal, but the Airsal can definately handle more.

On the raptor kit wesite it says that the kit includes the airsal 65cc kit, 16mm deltoro carb, bigger intake, special spark plugs, four different jet sizes, and the technigs next exhaust. Is there that much difference from 65 to 70cc.

You have to realize that the Raptor Kit IS the Airsal kit. Also, the Airsal/Raptor kit is not 70cc, it’s somewhere around 64-67cc (do the math). The only difference is that the Raptor kit includes the Airsal kit, a Technigas Next pipe, a 16mm Dell’Orto carb, and matching intake while the Airsal kit is just the 64-67cc cylinder, piston, rings, and reed valve.

So the raptor kit would be faster than say a 70cc airsal kit, biturbo, 15mm deltoro carb and bigger intake. I see this setup at mopedjunkyard.com, moped warehouse.com, and steves moped.com. The raptor kit and this kit are both around 350 bucks. What do you think the better buy would be?

A Raptor Kit is only faster since it has everything included w/ it. Also, there is NO 70cc Raptor or Airsal kit. I would prefer the Airsal kit though since it allows room for customization and greater speeds since you don’t have to be stuck with parts you don’t want and can get better ones. By the way, don’t go to Steve’s Moped. They are a bunch of retared ass-wipes that don’t know an engine is.

Airsal

Now that someone actually mentions it, the Airsal kit does seem to be extremely similar to that of the Raptorkit, just a different reed valve. The actual notation of the speed kit on the Airsal isn’t 70 and it’s not 64. The actual displacement (as notated on the sticker on the side of the box) is clearly written as 67.5cc. Just as a Tomos stock is considered to be 50cc’s when it’s actually 48.8cc. It’s just all rounding.

hahahahaha!!!!!! 70mph? get real… Fastest I ever saw was an old style Puch that did 63 but soon after blew the wrist pin bushing. But then again it had masive porting, milled head, custom sprockets, custom pipe, and running 118 octane race gas.

Anyway, Here is my set up so far:

2000 Tomos Targa LX

Adjustable aftermarket rear Shocks
Uni air filter
27 tooth speed sprocket
Bi-Turbo Exahust
NGK B7HVX Racing Spark Plug
#66 Jet (a little rich but thats ok)
40 psi on tires

Depending on the weather… it will hit 45 mph on a good day.

70mph is what he said. That was a two-speed I think but he said someone beside him in a car clocked him and said he did just under it. He blew his transmission a little while later. Now he’s running a little faster than 55 on a Puch one-speed.

now us sachs guys don’t have the luxury of big bore kits and oversized ventures. but a big D with the same size sprocket as a tomos a 32 tooth with the spark advace on the max will go 45 mph on the flat and 55mph on a good clip as you know the clutch is only rated for 30mph. now i ported a 505 1A head
with a big d crank and that went 50 until some fat *&$@ rode it and shot the rist pin clip thru the cylinder wall. i have for ever trying to regain that speed and what i,m thinking is i way a lot more now. so 20lbs is a big difference on a 49CC mines 51cc i stroked it .as for 70mph on a moped if you were a mathamatition you coul figure it out because its all about ratio. HP and torque have nothing to do with actual speed .it’s RPM that gives you tho speed HP just sustains it. so if you knew how many turns of the crank to one turn of the tire to the circumference 0f the tire times the RPM converted to mph. you see it is possible to do it on a calculator. if i were a little smarter i could probably do it. so if theres a rocket scientist who ride a moped may be can tell us how much RPM it would take to go 70mph. be sides maybe the kid lives in colorado and flat is down.

Although the tire rating may only be at a certain speed the truth is it can handle about 10 to 20 mph more. If a tire shows that it can handle up to about 50 then they will mark it down to about 30-45. If they had marked it at 50 and it blew at 45 then there is a big *ss law suit. Not that I’m defending the kid because it’s straight up bs. I just wanted to let you know.

“wow” I can’t beleive you guys spend all that money on that big bore kits and pipes and that’s all you get. i guess you can see that all that stuff is just tio give you back all the low end power you loose from putting on a small sprocket. i think a new sachs prima with the 49cc big D and a 27 tooth sprocket would go fifty just take it a little while to get there.my 32 tooth does 45mph. maybe the puch guy is right those tomos do suck. i saw one at a cosignment shop. and the stock sprocket was as small as my modified. my stock sprocket is a 45 tooth. and you guys got a twelve volt ignition!
what’s up with that?

Haha! there is still work to do on that puch. I havent had it port matched or ported yet, so i might send it away to smitty this winter. I wonder if i can get 60mph? I can still change the tires to slicks, tune it better, gear the front to a 18t, etc…. so much!

95mph….the the bed of a 345ci V8 truck!

no really, this thread is stupid. lots of these “kids”(no pun intended) are just posting there un-realistic speeds, and then argure about it later.

1996 Tomos Targa LX. 70cc Arisal, Techno estorial, 27t front sproket, #64 jet with only the metal screen filter. my yop speed….46-48mph. on any given day. this weekend i’m going to do some porting work to it and tune alittle. possibly bore my carb too??

I agree with speedo error is tons … 10% + (on the speedo) is so common. The gold standard is gps and getting a reading off that. Radar signs are ‘up’d’ also to slow people down and car fallowing are off too.

My fastest by moped is tommos sprint- stock jug, stock carb with upjet and homlet exhaust …. 41 mph (real mph) and sitting up wot relaxed cruising is 36-38mph.

Even my kitted vespa 180cc goes only 65 mph. And for saftey and relaiblility sake stay in the 40’s mph with your mopeds.

Also if your making a claim …... BACK IT UP !!! Get a gps reading!!!!!

I have been talking to one of our dealers out there who is trying to overcome the gearbox problem by creating a slide out gear that will enable the TOMOS to have overdrive. I told him to let me know if he has accomplished this, because he could probably sell a million of them. He said that if he can do this you could probably get 80-90 mph out of it.

Hmmmmmmmm, 90MPH = drum brakes, hmmmmmmm….

A 3-speed auto tomos motor would be awesome, It will just need better clutches, intake and output shaft seals. Whats the deal with the Curved A-35 intake anyway? Is the circled part designed to be a boost port or something like that?

Hi everybody.
Just joined and I am going to get a 2004 TomosLX.
I would like some upgrades {that can be purchased in Canada} for no more than $400CDN.
I need speed more than hill climbing. I weigh about 200lbs.

I am looking for someone to tell me what I need to get to bring me up to a 70cc with speed being my most important objective and what I can expect, realistically, on the flat.

I’m a bit of a moped moron so please say it in ENGLISH.
Thanks, Shane

Speed rating is based on an hour of operation. So if your tire is rated at 120 mph, it’s constructed to do 120 for an hour

2001 Tomos Sprint
67cc Airsal
Technigas pipe
mild intake porting
I went through the same speed trap and I only hit 42. it was the second pass too, the first pass was 41. On the street I was like half a bike length from Derek. I just don’t know. I just purchased a Dremel. So we’ll see what I can do.

Point being that once you break the 30 barrier, you become a target. The whole idea of peds (mo/no) is to not break 30 in most states and not have to tag and insure. Sure they can do 40, but once they do, you have to tag them and ride in the traffic lane instead of bike lane/as far right as possible.

One thing you all seem to be forgetting is how much horsepower is needed to achieve 70mph. Depending on the weight of rider and bike combined and wind resistance you need in the region of 16 to 20 horsepower to achieve 70mph. No kit I have ever seen for a Tomos will let it produce that much HP. It doesn’t matter how high the gearing is on ou bike if you don’t have the HP to pull the higher gearing. 50-55 is the most you can hope to get out of a Tomos as the max HP you are going to get out of it is somewhere in the region of 6hp or so.
Modern 2 stroke scooters with Yamaha/Minarelli based engines are going to be the fastest. Aprilia, Italjet etc will do about 55 mph when derestricted and up to about 80 mph when tuned. Those engine will rev to 15,000rpm and produce about 20hp. That will give you between 70 and 80 with raised gearing and a mallossi over range CVT. I am doing a tune (I do this for a living) for a kid right now. I am going to use a Paramkit 70cc, Homoet expansion chamber, 20mm DelOrto carb, Boysen reeds, 33 tooth sprocket. I am expecting a top speed of a max of about 50, maybe 55 mph.
I can achieve that on my Derbi without any tuning. I can tune my Derbi and achieve 70mph. Go to heavymotor dot com to see what a modern scooter can do. Go to Youtube to see what a Tomos can do.

2005 tomos sprint
biturbo.
standard 53 jet
standard 26front tooth 22 back
my girlfriend said 41 on flat, 38 up a mild hill. down hill 43.
so I’m probably cruising about 40 normally.

question. What sort of air filter should I be looking for? I want to keep it simple with the pipe, an air filter, and upjet. any recommendations on that sort of set up?

Re: Enter you tomos speed here please respond!!!

I have a 2001 LX with almost no mileage (still breaking it in).
It has a bi-turbo exhaust – all else is stock.
I weight 175 lbs. My tire pressures are 25 front and 50 real.
I can make 55 kph on any flat road just about any time.
I have pegged the speedo a couple of times at 62 kph.
That works out to a max of 37 or 38 mph. I believe that is reasonable. The stock suspension and brakes are not up to much more especially if the road surface is less than ideal.
Mopeds and motorcycles are not aerodynamic. The faster you go the more air you are pushing. The only way to go faster on a moped is to increase the revs as there is no 3rd, 4th, or 5th gear!
I do not believe this fellow has made an honest 70 mph on his moped. He may have a bad speedo. Anyhow 70 mph on a moped would scare the daylights out of me and I also own 2 motorcycles.
Mopeds are designed from day one to go 30 mph. The frame, the brakes, the suspension and even the engine are designed to perform reliably at these speeds. That some people get a lot more out of them is tribute to the robustness of the original design. I love my mopeds.

Re: Enter you tomos speed here please respond!!!

Tomos mopeds could be much faster if they had more gears or even better CVT transmission.
They rev out much to quickly in 2nd. They really need at least 4 or 5 gears, 6 would be even better.
My old FS1E would hold 50mph all day long and that had 4 gears and only produced about 2.5hp
My Fantic, which had 6 gears would do almost 60mph, but that would be screaming at that speed. The fastest standard moped (not all countries or even states say a moped must be an automatic) I have ever seen (without any tuning) was a friends Fantic GT, which did 65mph. These are all Euro spec mopeds from the 70ies (before speed restrictions etc). Modern mopeds (nopeds) with gears manage about 60-65mph when the restrictors are taken off, modern 2 stroke scooters manage about 45 to 55, they are usually a little better on acceleration, because you don’t have to mess with gears (CVT transmissions) just hold them wide open until you hit top speed.

Re: My big top speed

The Raptor kit uses an Airsal cylinder, it’s the same cylinder and piston. The difference is the combination of other parts, ie carb, pipe, reeds, inlet manifold, pipe etc.
