People who have acquired these things report your results on various setups here:

Also, might be useful for someone to do an installation guide here too.

(I ordered mine early status, so I’m still waiting on reg, box, and coil)

too many different mounting variables between e50 and za50. im wortking on figuring out if theres a timing mark on the flywheel somewhere as we speak. There are 2 lines on the flywheel that dont necessarly correspond to anything in one position so im trying others.

The 77 one came with stator, flywheel, and a CDI box. Also a wiring diagram (with some small errors), and a keychain dangly thing.

Just talked to one of them, apparently it’s the wrong CDI box.. They’ll be getting the right one in soon.

Damnit Dan. I love you guys and all, but you let Benji win this one.. Sending me crap that wont work, then not telling me about it…

Ahh well. From what I see/understand, it’s the same thing Treats sells, minus the test-work and honesty.

Other neat note, the arrow on the flywheel points the other way, not that this should be a problem?

It does work on the ZA50.. and everything with exception of the box is the same as ttreats one.. THink you need to run the 12V coil to make it right all the way.

just to let you know we have been testing these for weeks months and in my case years! I have a pile of boxes that suck thats why we just released it without box. I could send and crummy boxes but I’m going to make them into a time machine, i mean someone else is. The first edition of the rad E50 boxes are in and after a few months we’re going to get together as a community and decide what rpm/curve we want V2 to have. collective creative beautiful disaster. The E50 boxes we are shipping now rip, yeahhh!!! thanks testers and patient ones, benji

if you have an e-50 the pickup goes on the left. za50 it goes on the right.

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

basically just make sure the pickup is in the same location as the points were prior to the switch. A timing light is helpful if you forgot where your points were, and if you want it to be timed correctly, but basically its just plug and play, instant rip. The e50 box is sick, the za50 box to come is even better.

This CDI business has been so hyped up, I’m gonna have blue balls for a month if I don’t hear about some results someday soon.

Good luck everyone, I’m broke so I don’t own one, but show me how much they kick ass and maybe I’ll cut down the beer ‘n cigs budget enough to buy one for my Puch.

Remember, I’m pullin’ for ya, we’re all in this together (anyone?)

Red Green says that the CDI on his 2 speed Puch Magnum seems to work pretty well, but he needs to go check it with a timing light, and then open up the slots on the stator plate since it only mounted maxed out for him.

Dear Moped Army,

I picked one up from Treats. I’m pretty sure the ‘77 ones are the same. Hooked it up and it worked perfectly. You don’t have to move the pickup, it works fine where it is (this is on an e50).

I haven’t got to ride it too much because it’s been raining, but from the little I did ride it, I’ve noticed:
-consistent power
-bright ass lights

Sincerely,
Peter Nguyen

Even if it works well with the pickup the way it is, I want to try the pick up on the other side. Mine came undrilled/tapped for both sides. Who knows what size Drill bit/tap I need to make the other hole work?

I don’t know what the threading on the bolt holding the sensor was, but I just used a drill/tap/bolt that would fit. In other words, it may be easier to use whatever tap you have available that will work, use whatever the right size drill is for that tap and done.

One thing to mention is that you should move the ground wire to the other side of the bolt (not the nut-end [does that make sense?]). If you don’t, the nut protrudes too much, and touches the engine case and you can’t get the strator to rest properly.

to split that red wire to headlight/tail/horn – is the easiest way to do it, take puch wire harness – put red wire in one side – shove three wires on the opposite side?

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

The best way to split the power for headlight, tail light and horn is to stick put the red into one side, and then take a small piece of wire and make a jumper, to go to the next open block, and then another jumper from that block so that you only have a maximum of 2 wires in each side of the block. Like this.

Reply To This Message

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

Also keep in mind, some model year puchs had a horn switch that was constantly grounded, and will kill your headlight and tail light because all the voltage is going straight to ground, so you may have to find the switch that is the normally open kind that completes the circuit when pressed.

It’s easy to bolt up, but I am sick right now and haven’t finished. Since I am using this on my Sabre (neither an E50 nor a ZA50), I’d like to understand a little more about how/why the position of the pick-up matters? I’m bolting mine up so the pick up is approximately in the same location as the old points.

Reply To This Message

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

I did not relocate the ground to the front, I assume on an E50 it interferes a little bit with the case, but there is plenty of room behind the stator mounts on a 2 speed case. I did trim some of the wire sheath back so they would lay flatter, though. Also note that I have very little room for adjustment on the stator plate, if I needed to re-time it, I would have to modify the slots for more travel.

alright I got it going and riding with the hero majestic box. The hero box is rev limited or something because as soon as you hit like 30 it cuts the spark. I guess I will wait for the treats box. also I got it running with the pickup on the right side.

Got mine running, and yep, it rips well, son.

I installed the pickup on the alternate side initially as suggested by treats, and yes, it does NOT work. Leave the pickup on the installed side for e50. When installed on the other (wrong) side, it did in fact run, but so incredibly poorly.

I completely removed the brown ground wire, as it does nothing seeing how the frame is already grounded. I also removed the little steel wire cage thing off the back and got rid of the green casing. Since the bolt was no longer needed to hold on the wire cage, I was able to use a smaller bolt threaded right into the aluminum plate to hold down the coil instead of the longer one; this eliminated the interference with the engine case that prevented one from freely rotating the stator.

All in all, very happy and fast. I am also now able to power both of the automotive fog-lamps I had recently installed; 55 watts for the win!

Philp you have the stater turned 180 deg’s that looks easier than taping and moving the pick up.
And it works on E-50’s good setup.

Fast Bat out

Put mine on today and I think I picked up 10mph. This thing is sick, didn’t touch the pickup but I did move the ground. Only complaint is the coil doesn’t fit under my tank anymore.

But then it needs to be mounted upside down to work without being mounted on the opposite side? Can nobody say that in one sentence on the same post with the least bit of confidence? How confident are you guys that the it is functioning to its full potential. And like Farmer just asked regarding the pick-up, why or why not?

on my e50 i tried both ways, definitely had to swap the pickup. its in the same position that my points were (left side). I put the ground wire to the front and cut off the excess bolt, and still had to grind a little on the case to get it to move freely so as to adjust my timing. I haven’t had time to mess with the timing yet, hopefully this evening.

I used a scooter cdi box/coil combo and didn’t move the pickup. The spark off that thing curled my nose hair. I’m putting it on a bike for testing tomorrow. It’s an E-50

Reply To This Message

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

I’ve heard and seen both sides of the pickup work. Its dependent on the box, but you have to check your spark with a timing light to make sure its firing when you want it to. All the boxes we tested required the pickup be moved, but we haven’t yet tried out the latest box benji is selling all of you.

So again, get a timing light and check it out, and move the pickup accordingly. Its really easy to do, so no worries.

set mine up last night. runs about the same with the pickup on either side. stator in the middle. runs best with pickup on the left and stator slightly retarded. definitely more power all around. the problem i’m having, is it almost feels like there’s a rev limiter built in. when it hits 53mph it starts to act silly. anyone else having this problem? the box is the treats box.

I installed mine on my Sears/Puch Sabre today. I am only getting weak spark. At first I thought it was a ground issue, but I re-did the ground and verified I had good ground and I am still getting weak spark. I’ve moved the pick-up from right to left (with the initial set-up) and now it is back on the right. I am going to try moving it again when I get back to it (tomorrow night or Friday) and moving the stator (again), trying different placements … but … I am not getting enough spark to start the bike. Any ideas?

Is it possible this is related to the fact that it’s a kick start?

So, I’m now running at (don’t laugh, but I haven’t had time to get out a timing light or bother to find TDC on the flywheel) “middle” timing, and discovered something tonight: it helps if you actually tighten down the fucking flywheel nut…

Anywho, to summarize, I’m running with the pickup in its stock location (the right), the stator is installed normally (not upside-down), timing is “mid”, and using the treats CDI box, I’m ripping it up… honestly, I’m going fast enough to be worried about the integrity of my wheels/frame.

Well, like I said, I was foolish and didn’t tighten down the flywheel enough which was causing erratic behavior; For whatever reason, it seemed least problematic at fully retarded, but now having fixed the actual problem, the timing does not need to be set to an extreme. I may play with it a little bit now, but the necessity to have it all the way back as I first described was a false positive.

Took me about 30 minutes to install. I didn’t do much testing, or really set the timing, just locked it in around the middle. E50.

I didn’t switch the pickup either. So far, it rips really hard. Like, really. If I figure out any details on how this magic works, I will post them. I guess just drink some wizard’s fuel (cheap beer) and slap that fucker on.

Set the plate in dead middle, it ran but was quite retarded on the timing. By the time I had it set to full advance and got some of my lights hooked up it was too late to test anymore.

Just an update: I haven’t ridden around too much, or gone too far, but man, this CDI destroys. I am breaking in a new kit, so no top speed test yet, but the power overall is great.

Left the pick-up on the right, installed the stator in the middle, mounted the CDI/coil to the stock mount on an E50. Cut and rewired the whole thing; the wires are long!

No lights yet, because treats was out of the voltage regulator. I might skip it and just get some 12v high watt car bulbs and make them fit (I did that on a Tomos once, it works great). Super bright!

I wish I had more I could say to those having problems.

i think all the vendors have em sorted out by now i just installed both the 1 speed and 2 speed versions from 1977 w/o any pickup location mods using all the components (including regulators) that came in the package and they both ran like champs. I had never installed these b4 and asked no one to help just to see if it really was a piece of cake and yep sure was. Super self explanatory.

I didn’t timing light em but the best place to be on a puch generally is 17degree btdc, i set the timing on em slightly advanced from the middle of the stator slots.

goodluck cdi is cool

The positions on the pickups vs left and right side look to be a timing difference of 15 degrees or so, left side being 15 degrees advanced from the right side (haven’t measured exact)

Leaving the pickup on the right side runs well but even with the stator set to full advance i can tell its still retarded from where I had it before with the points. The low end is a little saggy, top end revs out more, and the pipe gets much hotter.

If I still had the leovince pipe on, it would have been fine since it had the low end. With that pipe I would run the stator in the middle with points. The estoril I have now has much higher powerband and was faster overall with much more advance. Hopefully getting the pickup moved over will help get the advance that I need.

the box makes all the difference, both treats and 77 had the wrong boxes for 1 and 2 speeds initially or they where switched etc. IDK about treats but as of last week any one who gets one from 77 will have the correct box for their specified motor that installs w/o modification.

About 3/4 the way to full advance. It probably is a little bit too much advanced right now as it was sputtering a little on the top end, that or I need to open up my main jet.

Mine was doing that before I got it advanced some more. Also could be that you have a slightly small idle jet, or too lean on the needle.

So I moved the stator on the left side, Ran like crap, was missing out like crazy and could never get up to top speed. this is with the Treat’s box. I have found that it runs best slightly advanced like elliot did.

So I just put my cdi on last night, I have an e50 with a kstar crank, kstar 70 kit, boss pipe, phbg clone, 180 psi on my comp guage. I have about 300 miles or so on it now running points, fully advanced stator with a point gap of .020. I was hitting about 45mph. I stupidly never put the timing light on it with the points to see how much advance it had. So I put on the cdi from treats with there box. First I installed it with the pickup on the right with the stator set in the middle, not enough timing so I fully advanced it and I was getting about six or seven degrees. Still not enough. So I switched it to the left and with the stator in the middle I got around 10 degrees. Now I am not sure how much timing my motor will take but with the pickup on the left my bike will only rev to about six thousand rpm then it missfires like hell and will not rev up any more. Does anyone know how much timing an e50 should take? Also has anyone else hade this problem, and what was your solution. It was my understanding that I could give it at least 12 degrees with out detonation but the box just cuts out with the pickup on the left.

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

flip the coil then.

I am currently under the impression that the coils come orientated different ways as I’ve seen both on on a handful of stators. The more I think about all this, the more mysterious it becomes. Regardless, there are tons of holes, 2 pickup spots, and 2 coil orientations, so it can be made to work on just about anything with enough patience.

they all seem to wobble, but don’t worry.

1.8-2.0mm BTDC works best, so its getting your stator positioned to do that, then it rips.

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

This was the advise Graham French gave me to install the CDI on an E50. Leave the pick up on the right side (the way the CDI arrives) it does not need to be flipped to the other side. You need to rotate the CDI completely clockwise (what would be completely retarded with a points system). make sure the bolt on the left side is in the bottom of the mounting hole then tighten it down and the one on the opposite side where it lies. Attached is a picture of the CDI I highlighted where the bolt should be.

The pictures is not mine, I took it from 1977’s website, and the advise is not mine, its from Graham. But it worked perfectly for me.

enjoy.

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

simply mark tdc somewhere both on the flywheel and on the case. Get either a degree wheel, micrometer, or timing tool like treats sells, and get a timing light. An impact wrench will spin your flywheel and the timing light will show you where the mark is relative to the flywheel. Get that mark to 1.8mm btdc and go fast.

Graham’s advice seems fine, but always check with a timing light. I’ve seen the stator ignition coil mounted both directions from the box, so you want to verify the advance is working properly and that its actually firing where it should be. I spent the last 2-3 days playing with this and other stators on a derbi, so getting it to work on a puch shouldn’t take much more than an hour.

Do realize that the pickup can be moved then the entire stator repositioned basically yielding the same results.

flywheel wobble is the suck.. just replaced my stock flywheel with a brand new one after dealing with a tiny bit of wobbling at higher temps after a woodruff key incident. but, i was just told that there is no way in hell the flywheels that come with the CDIs would ever wobble which doesn’t seem the case. and since i have a buttery new flywheel from treats, was hoping i could use it with the CDI kit as well. ever get it working right Vic?

dallas, i had my points set to exactly 1.65 btdc (points box/micrometer) before the cdi, and i could definitely notice the results. there’s a lot more pickup through the low/midrange and it’s more consistent on the top end.

The main reason I put it on was for the nice 12v power. Now I can see where I’m going at night.

I had my point system working as good as it gets with the timing set 1.7mm and the bike ripped pretty hard. After I figured out the timing on my cdi it seems like the power all through the midrange is smoother and with the extra advance on the top end its hitting more rpm than ever before. I gained close to 5mph on top. All in all I am pretty stoked on this thing, plus my lights are bright as f@#$ with the 12v coil. All smiles over here.

all the key does is help you mount the flywheel on the shaft so that your timing is in the right area and can then be tuned by rotating your stator in the slots. you don’t have to use it but i don’t see why you wouldn’t want to.

With the pickup on the right:

Unable to advance the timing enough to run right, maybe a total of 10 degrees at idle, reving to almost 15 degrees.

With the pickup on the left:

Unable to retard the timing enough to run right, firing more than 20 degrees before TDC at idle and reving to about 25 or so. Choppy firing, pre-detonation. Bad.

So.. I moved the pickup back to the right side, opened up the slots on the stator another 1-2mm so I could adjust for a little more advanced timing at idle. Bingo. Idles just under 17 degrees before TDC and revs to something a little over 20 degrees.

Results: Smoother idle than with my points (which were dialed in spot on 17 degrees before TDC), no breaker “float” at high end alowing for a few more R’s and (I haven’t GPSed it yet, but..) I’m assuming a hair more top speed.

No “voltage regulator.” Instead, I have a 55w Halogen tractor bulb ($16 from pep boys) and an 1156 tail light bulb in back both running on the same circuit. That halogen really lights up the night. I can already tell cars see me better.

For now, I am quite happy. I got what I wanted, reliability and brighter lights. Time will tell if these are durable. I sure hope thay are! Oh yeah, I calculated my timing with a dial indicator on the piston travel/simple algebra, and used a timing light to check. (1.2mm of piston travel is the stock 17 degrees before TDC setting).

Hope what I’m sharing is helpful! Good luck!

I want to fully advance mine now. I’m almost fully advanced (without modifying the slots) so i may as well go all the way. My low end could use a little extra boost even though its not bad as is. I went on a 50 mile ride yesterday and was ripping on the top end. Revs out nice and smooth with no cut-outs. Probably gave me a couple mph’s up top.

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

man, I started up this new build with the cdi fresh on, its a 70cc airsal, the bike started to rev by itself (i would think that means theres an air leak somewhere?), I dont have a working kill switch currently so I just pulled the boot out by the spark wire. and it shocked the crap out of me, like arm muscles seizing up and not being able to let go. which I don’t get at all. how the hell can you get shocked by a new, obviously insulated spark wire. the lighting wire and kill switch wire are unwired but weren’t touching anything.. pretty positive i didn’t touch anything else. the two grounding wires, brown and blck/white are both grounded against the lil frame that bolts the cdi box onto the old coil spot..i was chcking for spark a bunch before holding that wire and nothing happened. dont get it. Now i’m too scared. heh.

The CDI is pretty powerful from what I gather. I tested mine out on a lathe before mounting it on the moped, and was able to pull a centimeter long spark between the spark wire and the ground.

Re: Puch CDI 12v results here

Yeah; I mean, I dont think I had it wired wrong or anything; I didn’t move the ground from the back of the stator to front, so it was up against the engine case, but I don’t see how that would do anything. It seemed ridiculously powerful; I felt the desolate one going through my entire body; freaky

Anyway, super late tonight I finally switched it for the E50 box, turned off all the lights in my garage, and did a test to see if I had spark. consistent blue … nice spark … I am so excited … I would’ve run out and tried to start it, even though it’s 11 PM, but I am so fried … tomorrow, my friends, tomorrow .. . we will see if my ‘66 Sears/Puch Sabre works with the ZA50 box.

P.S. to Weeder: 77’s hasn’t had that kill switch in stock in forever. the website says it’s in stock, but it isn’t. you can get it as a “go kart” kill switch on e-bay …

Yes these are 55w halogen sylvania cars lamps. Tim, the wiring is identical on both bikes. The only difference is the e50 setup is the treats CDI/Coil combo while the za50 is the one from 77. Regardless none of that effects the lighting coil anyway. Gonna try the regulator off my za50 with a new bulb. Shit is getting expensive though.

I put mine on my Pinto and it rips!

Is there a consensus on whether or not to put the cover back on? I kinda like the way it looks with the cover off, but I should probably put it back on sometime.

I bought automotive bulbs from Kragen. Super bright. For the Sabre I had to get a special bulb (huge and weird looking) that I had to order online. Awesome.

whats the white wire for? yeah, i know you can just hook it up per the diagram and it will work but I like to know what things are for!! I’m using a korado cdi box and have spark with:
red to ht coil
brown to ground
yellow to lights
white to nothing and it works!!
i tried touching the white to the engine to see if it stopped the spark and it still sparks. i plugged it in to verde on my box and no spark. maybe its just a kill and needs to be properly grounded!!!

Just got mine last week. I moved the ground wire to the front and dremeled out the slots before I installed it, just in case. I set it to full advance, but it doesn’t run very well at idle/low rpm. The engine is making a funny noise and running rough. I’m assuming that is because of pre-ignition. I’m going to back it off a bit and see how that works. Everything besides the low rpm seems to be perfect.

FYI…I picked up an 1156 light bulb for the headlight and 5007 (5w) for the tail light. If you are going to run a brake light it will be 5008 (10w).

I installed mine with no modifications other than relocating the ground. The timing ended up being within the factory spec range for the E50 with the stator set to full advance.

The bike is running great and fires up noticeably quicker.

I want to buy a CDI from treats for my ZA50. Which version should I buy; V1 or V2? I’m kind of guessing V1 is the box that was causing lots of confusion over flipping the pickup & and V2 is the one with the bugs worked out? If that’s the case, why would anybody want a V1 box?

Re: The remix of theCDI 12v results here

what is “full advance”? How many mm or degress is that?

THere are many slots for the bolts. I’d highly recommend EVERYONE get a timing light and do this the right way. I’m sure it runs well for many people, but to get the most, dial that timing in, somewhere between 1.8 to 2.0 mm BTDC. Its really not that hard to time a bike. All you need is a timing light and either a degree ruler or some nice calipers. Think, the CDI is so cheap, so buy the right tool to set it properly. Again, I know it can work, but over-advanced timing can lead to some nasty problems. Thats my rant for now.

Time you shit right!

yo cuper dude, I second yr thoughts on the timing lights and whatnot. I am in a position where I set points and timing for the whole city, but purely go off of what fred’s guide says. I would kill to have such luxuries.
the treats cdi I ran in all positions and it worked well. fully advanced in laymen terms would be twisting the unit all of the way counterclockwise. that is pretty good timing. I did the ghostrider gabe mod and dremeled about 1.5 mm out more advanced and set it. I advanced it all of the way, but got a few pffffs and weird timing sounds, so I backed it off about .5mm and it’s up and ripping.
doing cool shit the pro way is awesome, and I prefer that. but let’s not forget that these things are basically lawnmowers that half retarded inbred slack jawed yokels from Indianer can fix, build and tune, and make go fast.

Re: The remix of theCDI 12v results here

yes of course anyone can make it work, but you could spend just a little extra cash and have it run even better. Sure simply rotating the stator and seeing what feels best works, I’ve done it myself, but often with mopeds, what feels best often isn’t best. We sure run fast when we lean out. I hate seeing pistons with holes in them or weird shrapnel destroy a piston crown.

Regardless, I’ve tested basically all of these boxes and timing positions, coil flips and what not. Myself and 2 friends were essentially benji’s guinea pigs for all this beyond his own testing the previous 2 years. My idea of cdi was set it and forget it. This didn’t initially happen, but once I timing my bike, verified everything was in order, it has been amazingly reliable since. So I dunno, I guess I just want everyone to experience the awesomeness we have. When I hear “low end is now lacking”, I’m very sure the timing is not correct, because we’ve all had all around gains, low end, mid range(!) and top end.

If this is performance tuning and a results thread of this CDI, the idea should be to maximize performance, and while you can say “advance it a bit more”, someone may have the stator in the wrong slots, the coil could be flipped wrong, or a whole host of other issues. A timing light is the only sure way to make sure each setup is actually set. Sure its lawnmower tech or whatever, but if you are spending any money on performance parts, you want your shit to rip. So whatever, take my advice for what its worth, or not. I guess I just want everyone to have something awesome, and this (or any ignition setup) is really the key to the power your moped makes. If your ignition timing sucks, no matter what you do, your bike will suck.

At “full advance” (the limit of adjustment), I checked the timing with a light and it fell a bit short of the 1.65mm BTDC mark I had laid out on the flywheel using a dial indicator. The maximum advance on my particular unmodified stator appears to be within the stock timing range for the E50.

Mark: you usually need to make them. there are tools to insert into the spark plug hole and give you an indication of piston position; you can just use a pencil or something to poke in there and find top dead center. Then, score your case and magneto at that spot.

I posted this in the ignition timing values thread, but it is probably more appropriate here:

my stator is unmodified as of right now, and fully advanced. the advance curve on these boxes seems to advance quickly through the lower RPMs and then level out to a slower advance at higher rpms. because of this, how high you have your idle set effects your timing at idle quite significantly. a really low idle was dropping my timing to around 0.8-1.0mm BTDC. A decently quick idle had the advance to about 1.2mm BTDC. Once revved up the engine it would advance to about 1.5mm BTDC at maybe 8000 RPM (just a guess) but at that point the advance curve seemed to have levelled off significantly.
I’m guessing it would have maybe gotten to 1.6mm BTDC at around 10,000 RPM.

All that being said, I think the stator does need about a mm more room to advance the timing to where you would want it on a high performance set-up like a Puch Polini. On a close-to-stock set up the stator would be perfect at full advance without slot modification.
