Modding the variator just lets the plate travel further, Letting your belt climb higher and give you a higher final gearing. Thus more top speed, it wont change your low end.
Lighter weights will give you more low-end because you stay in a low gearing longer. But if they aren’t heavy enough you wont be able to variate all the way which will kill your top end. Also if they are too light you end up running at high RPM all the time, even at lower speeds, which is bad for engine wear and gas mileage.
For the best performance all around you would mod the variator, then choose the lightest weights that are still heavy enough to open your variator all the way.
(disclaimer, I’m not a rad hobbit dude. This is just the same for all variated bikes)
