80 batavus starflite won't start

i just picked up this ‘ped and swapped out a motor from a parts bike that i know is good as far as compression, i rebuilt the carb, reeds are fine, the points seemed fine i was told that it should run by a motorcycle mechanic i picked it up off of and he’s been working on bikes since the 50’s the guy knows his stuff. so i got the bike to give me a strong blue spark, i smell gas, after kicking it over a few times, my tomos targa lx was stolen last week so now i have to learn about working with mechanical ignitions which i know very little about so basically i was wondering if the points are clean and i have a solid spark could it possibly be that i need to adjust the stator on the backing plate or whatever its called, it seemed like the bike almost farted a few times when trying to start it but before i go any further i would appreciate some info from bat’ owners or anyone who is familiar with mechanical ignitions. thanx
