This ped has always had air bubbles in the fuel line. They show up between the filter and the carb, but even with huge bubbles the ped runs the same. They come back within a day or so of flushing them out anyway. The line is at least a couple inches from the piston block, so it’s not getting too hot there.
What did work was playing with the float. I had adjusted it a little last fall before replacing the gasket and float needle and must have left it set a little off. After putting the carb back together the ped seems to be running fine.
I’ve put about 25 miles on it since making the adjustment and I haven’t lost power since. At times I think I hear something different from the engine and am convinced it’s about to happen, but it never does. I couldn’t used to go more than two or three miles before it did, and I’d had to stop and cool down.
The trial-by-fire tonight was the drive from downtown Princeton to a shopping center near the Trenton Beltway. Without being able to go on the highway, the only way to get there is a string of back roads, the last being a two mile stretch of narrow, shoulderless road sandwiched between farmland and a creek. It’s supposed to be 40MPH and no passing, but no one seems to have noticed. Since it’s the only way to get to the supermarket, I’ve just got to stay close to the side and pull the throttle open the whole time.
I haven’t made it there and back in over a month without losing power at some point and having to steer over into some tall grass for a few minutes, lest I get run off the road by crazy NJ drivers.
But today: today I made it both ways without a hitch. Not just that stretch of road, but the whole eleven-mile round trip.
If this holds up, and it was just that tiny float adjustment causing me so many problems, then you, Sachistan, are my new hero!
