Popping is usually a sign of poor timing or clogged exhaust

Check your timing. The points should be fully open when your piston is at top dead center (closest to the head). remove your spark plug and put it in backwards until the piston moves the furthest it can go.

Then look at your points and see how far open they are. They should be about a half millimeter open and all the way open at this point.
