I had said that taking off the airbox didn’t help.

Some more experimentation: taking off the airbox alone doesn’t help with the four-stroking, but taking it off AND holding the choke closed seems to… for a few minutes. Once it starts doing it again, I’ve just got to let the ped cool down before it’s any use anymore.
