Hmmm, that is odd.
When you cleaned your carb, did you hose down the float needle? It’s possible that carb cleaner could do some damage to the rubber tip, making it not seal correctly. Also, is there a chance you accidentally bent the little brass clip dohickey that the float needle slides in to? I know I’ve heard that you can help stop a leaky Bing by bending that, so if you bent it the wrong way, it’d seem like that could make it start leaking. Either way, since it was working properly before you took apart the carb and now it’s not working properly, chances are pretty darn good that it’s something to do with the carb.
As for the smoking, what kind of smoke is it? Does it smell like something burning, or is it more like exhaust smoke, or something else? Does it stop after a while or have you not let it go long enough to find out? If it smells like something burning and it stops after a while, it might just be degreaser residue burning off.
I wish I had some idea what that mysterious hose was doing. I can’t think of any possible explanation for why any existence or lack of a hose would make your engine smoke, though. What’s the diameter of the hose? Or can you tell more or less what it’s made of? And it’s black, right? No markings?
