Cleaning your points as described in Fred’s Guide (no, you probably don’t need to clean yours if you’ve got spark, but now you know where they are):



Yes, they are hard to see and find, especially hidden behind the flywheel. Get really close, turn the flywheel, and look for something that moves. They only open and close a mm or two, so it’s probably not going to jump out and scream “I’m moving!” at you.

If you’ve got smoke pouring out around the cylinder head, yeah, you probably ought to check it out and tighten it all back down.

Go get a fuel filter. Yes, now. Even if your tank isn’t that rusty, which would you rather do? Spend 5 minutes now putting a filter on, or 30 minutes pushing your moped home (which is really embarrassing, by the way) when it dies on you in the middle of nowhere because your carb is clogged? Don’t quote me on this, but a lawnmower one should work if you can’t find anything more suitable. (Pretty sure you’ve got 3/16 fuel line, but don’t quote me on that either).

To check your transmission fluid, unscrew this screw:



Get some Type F automatic transmission fluid. Put some in that hole. Does it leak right back out? If it does, you’re already topped up properly. If it doesn’t, keep adding fluid until it DOES ooze out. If you ever want to change your fluid (which probably isn’t a bad idea) there is a drain screw on the bottom that you can unscrew to get all the old stuff out.

To check for air leaks, get the moped idling on the stand. Get a can of carb cleaner, and douse all the areas where metal joins metal—the top of the carb, the carb to intake, the intake to where it joins the engine, the two engine halves, and anywhere else that looks dirty. :) If your idle drops or you kill the idle, you’ve got an air leak at the place that you just sprayed.

Last thing: did you clean the banjo bolt when you cleaned your carb? They don’t mention it in the carb-cleaning video that I remember, so that’s why I’m asking. It’s the thing that your fuel line attaches on to.



It’s got this itsy bitsy little screen in the hollow end of the bolt, which can get clogged easily. Make sure it’s clean along with the rest of your carb.
