What does the exhaust port on pa50 feel like?

When you pull off the pipe, and probe a finger up into the engine through the exhaust hole, what should you feel? I feel a smooth metallic object at the end of the whole which I assume is the piston or some sort of valve, and the 1/2’’ of pipe or so is not round, it has almost a flat or hour glass shape. Is this carbon build-up, or is this the shape of the pipe inside? I don’t want to dig, gouge, or otherwise remove this stuff if its actually part of the exhaust system. Thanks for your help.
