Linda its as easy as pie , but be carefull with that torque wrench sometime they dont set properly and what you think is 7 ftlbs could be 30 I dont use them I use a 1/4 drive socket and tighten the nuts as tight as you can with just the strength in your wrist I have never had a problem and its real close to the right tightness, As far as the carbon goes just take a little piece if steel wool an clean it up , that gasket will go on ok once you get it down to the cylinder just be carefull and you will be fine
