82 AMF Roadmaster timing

followed the timing procedure in the minereli v-1 manual but couldn’t advance the stator enough to get the points to open before TDC. advanced it as far as i could and it ran alright for a day and now it s acting up again. sputters and pops but wont start. reset the points and tried to set timing again but no luck. any ideas would be appreciated.
