gasket material

The float bowl on my Batavas is leaking bad, real bad but not all the time, only when parked or lifted. It was minor but yesterday it leaked about a quarter tank in the garage.

What would you recomend for gasket material, to buy and cut or make a gasket stuff?

Also, why wouldnt the float srop the flow of gas too the bowl?
