Express kick start

Recently I got the ped going, now once in awhile i can crank it up, but when i pull the brake to relase to turn the motor over… nothing. It’s not the little lever on top the chaincase either because i pull it all the way. Then if i put a ratchet on the flywheel and turn the motor over, it will work using the normal starting method. Then I will have the same problem a few days later. How do I make it stop?
