serious backfire on minarelli

my friend was trying to get his newly kitted (polini) minarelli running, and when he kicked it over to start it, it backfired so hard that the silencer on the pipe blew off. we’re figuring that must mean the timing is so retarded that the charge ignited after the exhaust port had already opened, right? so we should advance the timing to solve the problem? or is there something else that can cause a massive backfire like that?
