batavus woes

I just bought a ‘77 Batavus Starflite (anyone wanna race? haha)
I took it for a spin yesterday and got it almost up to 25 mph, not bad for a Bat that had been laying around for who knows how long…
Last night my brother comes over and we take turns racing the neighborhood kids, after a bit of riding it starts acting weird: i’m going about 15 and i lay on the throttle and it starts sputtering and stalls.
after that it wont start again. I park it for the night and go to bed, wake up in the morning and take it for a spin sans exhaust pipe. Feels like it’s going about the same speed, then stalls again, wont start up for an hour or two.
I took apart the carb, everything’s nice and tidy, jet is a 54.
Does anyone know what jet size should be? I was thinking this might be my problem… I know Batavuses come with a “break-in” jet that was supposed to be replaced with a smaller one.
So in the meantime I’m gonna go get a spark plug wrench, check to see whats up with that. If anyone has any suggestions what it might be, please tell me! this is my first attempt at tuning up a moped, I’m super stoked to get familiar with my bike and impress my friends with how black my fingernails are…
