Rookie working on NC50

I am a rookie, a 65 year old rookie, but still a rookie. I have a 1980 Honda Express NC50. Ok, here’e what I have done since yesterday: 1) installed an air filter, 2) installed an fuel filter, 3) removed and disasembled the carb, 4) soaked the carb parts in vinagar for 8 hours, 5) blew the jets out with compressed air, 6) reassembled and reinstalled the carb 7) removed the muffler and burned it out then reinstalled it.

Then I tried to start it with the choke on,It fired and ran 3-5 seconds. With the choke off it would not start. I ran the idle air adjustment screw out from 1/2 turn to 6 full turns in 1/2 turn increments, trying to start it after each 1/2 turn. Each time it would start as long as the choke was on, but ony run 3-5 seconds. Seemed to make no difference how many turns it was in or out. Without the choke on or if I tried to give it any gas it would not fire at all. If i gave it any gas while it was runnning it would stop as if i turned off the key.

Any guesses as to what my problem is?
