New user repair question

I found a 1980 NC50 in a scrap yard and started “playing” with it. My wife of 45 years knows me so she made me commit to investing less than $100 to make it run. It had no spark, very little compression, a clogged carb, and a super rusty fuel tank. I replaced the head gasket and got compression, replaced the points and got spark, and cleaned the tank and got fuel flow, but had to burn out the muffler before it would fire and run. Now the problem is that it starts and runs for 10-15 seconds at a high rpm then dies. It also will die sooner if I try to give it any gas. The air filter box and filter are missing. I dont want to spent $40.00 bucks for one. Since I have read that it needs a filter to run, I think I can jury rig one from another junked moped (different brand and model). Think that will work? Also I need advice on adjusting the carb. Any other suggestions will be appreciated too.
