Do I need the elbow for a bing carb to work?

I’m trying to get this Puch Maxi to start. I bought the Bing carburetor, and a new throttle cable ( both of these parts were missing when I bought the bike) , BUT there was no elbow piece. Can I just thread the throttle cable in the carb, and see if the bike will start? and meanwhile order the part!

thanks
Tom

p.s. Anyone in Portland Or have an extra elbow I can buy?
