thumb test doesn’t work, you need a real compression tester (can order them from harborfreight for $8) .. reading this again, it sounds to me like you maybe broke or smeared the rings (soft-seized), such that there’s just enough compression to get the engine running, but not enough to operate at load….
and so initially it was only slightly damaged, allowing for operation at low speeds, but as it was run in that condition the damage got progressively worse, lowering the compression to the extent that it now won’t run at all.
if you can’t get a compression tester, you should take the topend off and have a look at the piston, rings, and cylinder wall.
