Fat boy broke his shocks.

So, as if I needed another reminder that I need to drop 50 pounds, last night I hit a pot hole and now my shocks on my front fork are stuck and won’t release. I’ve tried to bounce them and kick them loose but nothing seems to work. Other than buying a new set of shocks, does anyone have any advice? Is there any way I can’t prevent this from happening again?
