PA50 II progress, not quite there, gettin better

Ok, so here is the situation to date. Got a PA50 II with about 7000 miles on it. Starts great, drives real slow. It has great acceleration from about 0-10, then slowly climbs to about 20-21-22 and stays there. It runs MUCH better with the choke on, all the time. I spent a couple hours spraying carb cleaner through the air intake, after removing the filter, and that seemed to help a little, not much. I opened the hex bolt cleaning hole on the exhaust and there didn’t seem to be a lot of gunk in there, at least not that I could reach. I’m running out of ideas, short of buying one of those leo vince pipe and a kit, as the three hundred forty bucks or so those two items would cost, plus the 120 I paid for the bike, would be reasonable for a nice fast bike. However, there is no telling what might fall apart on this guy. I was riding with the choke propped open, because its faster that way, when I heard a pop like someone open some champagne. Stopped, turned around, and there is this long hex bolt in the middle of the street, obviously off my bike. I just don’t know, I’m affraid to pull the exhaust as the gasket might be crystalized, then I won’t have any exhaust. Same with pulling the carb carb and cleaning it, affraid it will just fall apart. The bike is in really good shape for its age, but its still almost thirty. PLEASE ADVISE ME>
