I used high temp enamel for my body and florescent plastic paints for the tank. then I clear coated with RustOleum high heat gloss (make sure to keep all the paint brands the same!!) and I have had very little damage due to gas leaking. Mainly right around the Petcock (it used to leak really bad!!) and the gas cap.
As for cleaning, that Bat exhaust is a bitch, I used either a deep 10m socket or a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the nut.
a dull flat head screwdriver for a big cleaning and then a toothbrush and pure gas or carb cleaner for the rest of the gunk.
You will get REALLY messy doing this job, so don’t wear your pretty clothes.
