I can’t say how much sweat, frustration, aggravation, time, money and even blood can be saved by buying one or even a pair of motorcycle tire irons for repairing flats and changing tires .. especially on the side of dusty, hot, dangerous highways. I did without real irons for most of my 7,500 mile trip, using a pair of plastic ‘irons’ I found in a tube repair kit. The worked okay, sort of, for a couple flats, but then they bent and softened, and from the very start I had to supplement them with the box end of wrenches, sometimes the open end, and the open end of course could have cut my tube and knicked the tire’s bead, costing money and increasing chances of tire failure. After much aggravation, sweat and a couple of cut fingers I finally gave in and asked at a motorcycle parts shop to see a real iron, and was surprised to find it was not heavy, not too long to pack on the bike, and was reasonable in cost. I never looked back. I still use the box end of my long wrench to assist the tire iron, but do sometimes consider getting another iron. The iron could also be used as a pry, for instance, during repair of accident damage. I hope this helps some of you as much as my iron helped me.
