Im cant say about the speedo lights… my speedo is shot, need to find a new one. But I think the place where you should start here is dissasemble the carb and give it a really good cleaning – I reccomend the dip type carb cleaner, let it soak overnight and then spray out all the passages with compressed air. Be sure to take the jet out and clear all the little holes – running a thin piece of steel wire (like pulled out of a steel brush) through the small holes helps too). Start there, make sure all your cables are set up correctly. See if that helps your idle… I think it will – mine was doing similar things when I first got it.
Make sure you get all the gunk out – otherwise it may work for a while and then get clogged later (like mine currently is)
Once its clean, reassemble make sure everything is tight and try to set the idle speed as low as possible – then you should be able to get it to dissengage the variator.
I have a picture from when I got mine a few weeks ago on my profile, will have to update soon
