^^ That should be easy to do. You can get some stiffer/thicker gauge spring stock, trace the bastids, get tin snips and go to town. You can also get a metal punch from J. C. Whitney to make yer screw hole (heh huh hehe huh).
I had considered doing this because those springs do wear out lickety splits.
Also, if yer jonx isn’t engaging, the cam inside the clutch cover could be installed incorrectly. Or, the bearing on the inside of the starter plate could be toast. Chances are great that those leaf springs are worn.
