Petcock repair Kromag

The petcock on my 78 Kromag kept leaking especially when in the off position. So I looked for a new one and didn’t see one that looked like mine. So I read up on repairs and found it is possible so I tore into mine. Drain the tank. The Kromag petcock comes off the tank with a clockwise turn on the nut which also expells the petcock due to its being reverse threaded. Some petcocks have bend in the filter tube so delicate removal is called for. This was not the case on mine but it could happen. The petcock body is 17mm with a 15mm nut under the on off res- lever. Loosening the nut we find it is a cap nut with a spring beneath it. Its spring loaded and the spring can eject so caution there also. Beneath that a retainer plate washer, then the valve disc which presses against a urethane? gasket. The gasket has three holes at 9, 6, and 3 o’clock around small brass tubes. The urethane? gasket had degraded to a crumbly mush, using a small exacto blade ( any other implement on this job is going to make it difficult) flick the remains out. Retain a side portion to compare thickness with your gasket material. The green gasket material I had was too thin, but the cork gasket material was perfect. The cork is pressed and tends to come out in chunks if not cut in a precise manner, so a new exacto blade makes this easier. Use the valve disc for a pattern on the cork then cut the three tube holes as perfectly as possible. Put in the gasket, then the valve disc at the off setting, then the retaining plate washer, then the spring, align the lever tooth with the valve disc slot and push down on the lever compressing the spring until the nut threads engage the petcock body, finger tighten the nut. These are fine threads cut into soft aluminum, DO NOT FORCE or they will crossthread and you will be WATF. Finish tightening with the 17 and 15mm wrenches and check the movement of the lever gently, reinstall the petcock to the tank.
