It’s hard to say if you’ll need a new engine till you get your hands on it. If the previous owner(s) was horrible to it, you’re probably going to have to replace some stuff. If the previous owner(s) was average to good to it, you’re probably okay. With a Puch engine (the 1-speed E50 anyway), you shouldn’t have any problems finding replacement parts. If you’re interested in what the insides of all this look like, check here. Some people in one of your other threads were giving you good advice—I’d listen to that. If it’s got decent compression and isn’t seized, you should definitely do it. And even if it doesn’t match those criteria, you can still fix that stuff, but it’ll mean more work and more money.
Rust can be fixed. If you’ve got rust in your tank, you can use muriatic acid, phosphoric acid, vinegar, electric something-or-other, evapo-rust … there are lots of choices. The evapo-rust should also work on rusty body parts, like chains or other submersible items. Minor surface rust can be removed with 0000 (super duper fine) steel wool or with a wire wheel attachment for a dremel. If the rust is really bad, it might have eaten away at the underlying metal. The chrome rack on mine is like that. I got all the rust off, but it kind of has a pitted and dull surface (or if you want to be euphemistic about it, you could call it “brushed” or “patina”).
This is a good guide for other things you might want to look out for, especially on a moped with 7000 miles.
