Police appeal after attack by moped maniac
Dec 17 2002

By James Osborne

POLICE are hunting a crazy moped rider who caused a traffic jam in Reading town centre and then attacked a woman driver who asked him to move.

The incident happened only yards from the Castle Street police station during the evening rush hour and officers say it must have been witnessed by hundreds of homegoing commuters.

Problems began when the red-and-black bike was spotted weaving across the road as it was ridden down Castle Hill, slowing following traffic and forcing other motorists to take avoiding action.

As the moped rider reached Castle Street he slewed to a halt, completely blocking the road.

A 25-year-old woman got out of her

car to remonstrate with the rider and asked him to move but he brutally punched her in the face before turning tail and driving off.

The incident happened around 5.30pm on Thursday, December 5 and police say part of the bike's registration plate is RK 51.

PC Danny Everitt said: "The victim suffered minor facial injuries and was very shaken and upset after the attack. "At this time of day the street would've been very busy, and as well as people in their cars there would've been a lot of pedestrians walking past and standing at a nearby bus stop. "These people may well have seen this incident and I'd ask them to contact me as soon as possible."

From Wayne:
Not sure If I'm reading this right-- it's new news from Dec 10, but the accident happened in 2001.

It says moped, but it is a scooter story. Does this belong here, or should I have screened it?

Also--- we all know that the "ARMY" and "BRANCHES" are all about 50cc mopeds (pedals).... I get the impression people on the forum are interested in ANY nifty engine development--- the smaller the better. Whatever we decided---we talked a lot about the SEGWAY....
We will see more and more small cars-- and some will be Pee-Vee's and evolution of the Gyro. (think about the cars in the background of the movie AI)
I saw a Mini cooper today!! Man, was it cool.... almost like a "Moped car" if only it had an "SUV'S Suck" sticker... but it was brand new and deluxe.
I digress--- here's a story about a guy who got wiped out on his scooter, so ride safe, and figure out why his death in 2001 is making news in 2003!!

THROWN INTO AIR
TIM JAYS
12:30 - 10 December 2002

War veteran Charles Sanderson was left for dead after being struck by a moped, a court heard.
The 86-year-old was crossing Dudley Street, Grimsby, when the collision happened, the town's magistrates were told.
It is claimed the moped rider, Elizabeth Cook, then fled the scene.
Mr Sanderson later died from his injuries.
Cook (24), who went on trial yesterday, pleaded not guilty to careless driving.
The former Cromwell Road resident did not enter pleas to charges of driving without insurance, failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.
Mr Sanderson's wife, Kathleen, was just five yards behind the former soldier when he suffered fatal injuries on August 16, 2001.
Giving evidence, the widow said she had visited the Fieldhouse Medical Centre in Dudley Street with her husband shortly before the incident.
They had made to cross the road, with Mr Sanderson walking in front.
"I tried to stop him going because I saw the (motor) cycle coming," Mrs Sanderson said.
"I told him to stop and he kept on going. After that I heard such a thud. It all happened so quickly."
The Winston Avenue couple had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary two months before the accident.
The incident was witnessed by Grimsby man Paul Stennett, who was having a conversation with his friend Andrew Beckett by the roadside.
Mr Stennett described how he saw Mr Sanderson "thrown right up into the air" by the impact.
As Mr Stennett went to see how Mr Sanderson was, he saw Cook frozen to the spot and apparently in shock.
"She then ran off," he said.
Shortly before the accident, Cook was spotted at a set of traffic lights by bricklayer Mark Porter, who was driving a company pickup truck. He said he had been waiting at the lights when the moped had pulled up alongside.
"I thought it was a bit silly," he said.
"It's a tight junction and there's not enough room for two vehicles."
The moped had pulled quickly away from the junction, Mr Porter said. The incident happened just 150 metres from the traffic lights, but he did not witness the crash.
David Shucksmith, a vehicle examiner for Humberside Police, told the court the deflated rear tyre of Cook's scooter would have made it difficult to steer the vehicle.
The case continues.

The youth was taken to hospital for a check-up. The woman driver was unhurt.

I got a couple other ideas.... perhaps a catagory....

Some people just don't want to read about death--- others arent bothered.

Same with business, safety, legals......weirdness.... crimes...

Without getting too restrictive...some kind of category.... just a thought. Not finding a lot of new news.

Teen victim not wearing crash helmet
Dec 17 2002

By The Huddersfield Daily Examiner

A TEENAGER badly hurt in a motorbike crash was not wearing a crash helmet.

The 18-year-old from Golcar is the second teenager to be badly hurt while not wearing a crash helmet in two separate accidents in Huddersfield over the last three weeks.

In the latest accident on Manchester Road in Marsden, an 18-year-old from Golcar and a 19-year-old from Marsden were flung from a 125cc bike after it hit a chevron road sign near the junction with Stubbin Road at 12.20am yesterday.

The 18-year-old, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered serious head, neck and back injuries. He is in a serious condition at Leeds General Infirmary.

Police today urged people never to take the risk or break the law by riding motorcycles without helmets.

A 17-year-old Holmfirth boy was critically injured when he was thrown from a moped on which he was riding pillion in Woodhead Road, Holmfirth, at 10pm on November 23.

He is now off a ventilator at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and said to be improving.

The rider, an 18-year- old from Meltham, was less badly hurt.

Parents are pissed. I bet trike would be too. I wish I had some happy x-mas moped stories.... this is getting glum. I'll find others tomorrow.

Highways experts today pledged to investigate the safety of a busy crossroads after a young man was killed just yards from his home.
The move comes as his family today told how they feared there would be an accident at the junction.
The family of trial biker Karl Cody were devastated when the 22-year-old was knocked from his moped and killed in Burton Road, Lincoln.
Dad Peter (49), from nearby Turner Street, described his son as incredibly popular, sensible and a highly talented cyclist. The engineer had warned before the tragedy that drivers would learn about the dangerous junction with Rasen Lane "the hard way".
He said: "It is notorious. Every time I cross it I say to whoever is with me how dangerous it is."
People living and working near the junction next to the Plough Boy pub said the crossing was well known as an accident blackspot.
Mal Casement, charity shop leader at the St Barnabas Hospice Charity Shop next to the junction, said: "It was just a matter of time. Drivers screech around the corner and it terrifies you."
Wilson Street resident Brian Ashton said: "I've lived here all my life and I can say that junction is terrible.
"It's an awful accident blackspot."
Alan Curtis, pub landlord at the Plough Boy, said: "People around here would be in favour of installing a crossing or lights. It's potentially dangerous."
Nearby residents called for traffic lights or a roundabout to be installed to prevent another tragic accident - and dubbed a new roundabout nearby "a waste of time and money".
Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership spokesman Steve Batchelor said an investigation into the junction would be carried out because of the crash.
"Before this tragic collision occurred there had only been one slight injury from a collision in the last five years," he added.
The row over road safety along Burton Road came as tributes for Mr Cody flooded in and flowers were placed at the roadside.
Girlfriend Nichola Hodson (20) said: "He would light up the room with just a smile and his cheeky grin. He was loved by so many people and was everyone's friend."
Best friend Lewis Clark (20) said: "He was more of a brother than just a friend. I know wherever he is now he is happy and free."
His employer at a Lincoln cleaning firm, Alastair Nicoll, said colleagues were stunned into silence by the death.
"He was without a doubt the most popular employee," he said. "He was mad about push bikes and he showed up to work one day on a mono-cycle."
Owner John Crick, from F &J Cycles in Spring Hill, where Mr Cody spend most Saturdays, said: "He would always go out of his way to help and would expect nothing in return."
Karl's mother Sandra said: "The shock has not passed and I feel so numb. I keep expecting him to come through the door."
Dad Peter added: "He was a bright lad. We have always been a close family. Everybody just thought of us as Karl's parents.
"He was incredibly well known and incredibly liked."
He said his son had been at the centre of the trial biking and skating culture in Lincoln since its beginning.
A plea from the family to make sure a skate park Karl supported was completed has been taken up by Lincoln City Council leader Ric Metcalfe.
He said: "We will redouble our efforts as this will be a fitting tribute to one of the young people who provided much leadership and determination."
Brother Steven (21) was too upset to comment.
Police are continuing an investigation into the accident, which happened just after 6pm on Thursday.
Any witnesses should call police on (01522) 882222.

That's not the worst of it. LAst year, a dropout from our school, age 18, mugged an 80 year old woman, and stole her money, but ran when she started hilling him with her cane. That kid deserves the worst the state pen can give.

My Mom is 82,Toehead, and people of that age are FRAIL and fragile. Thank God, when my Mom fell on Saturday, she broke no bones in her hand or arms. My Mom is 4'10" and couldn't defend herself at all. But she's got 5 boys living that will protect her if ever threatened by a punk like this one. How can a person be that unfeeling? I just don't understand............ don

Things ARE pre-determined, but since we cannot know WHAT is pre-determined, we need to do our best to make things happen well.

Religion aside, particle physics indicates things ARE pre-determined, but we don't know what's in store.

Things are as they are now because things were as they were then.

Right?

if that was the case she owuld honk her horn shake a fist give the bird and pass them... not get out of you vehicle in traffic walk up tro someone on a moped...

thats just absoulty HER FAULT . If i was sitting at a light. maybe my moped stalled and some WIERDO gets outta therere car get into my personal space yelling or waving her hand wildly im sorry.. if im threatened.. and I probly would be the crazy lady would get a knucle sandwich...

And Of cource the moped guy got the heck outta oddge after it.. prboly afriad the physcho lady would chase him down and run him over hell she already left her vehicle to confront him about being stopped. SHEESH..

..........interpretation of what is exactly stated here. NOW...the ONLY way a woman would be threatening to me is if she has deadly force......a knife, gun, swinging a pipe,etc.. YOU would feel threatened? You're a pretty big man,if photos don't lie. WHY would you feel threatened? BALONEY! This woman was aggravated and who knows why? We just are TOLD she asked the mopeder to `get outta' the way'. Now HE BRUTALLY punched her in the face(WE ALL ......MALE OR FEMALE, have a right to yell, don't we?)! Did SHE HIT him? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Bottom line,DUCK.....think about it.........IF you are accosted by an angry woman, DO YOU FEEL physically life-threatened? I don't think so,Duck! It's a one out of a thousand case of confrontations where a man has to hit a woman,Duck. Your one arm is stronger than both of theirs. There was a lot of times my older brother could've lashed out and hurt me, BUT REALIZING I was no threat to him, being smaller and weaker, he just shoved me aside. I thank him for that. Now if Ida' had a club or a weapon, yeah, he'd have hurt me. don-ohio

TRAILOR trash looking to start shit for a fight..
I doubt any 25 year old lady with any good intentions wouldn't just get outta her car to go politely talk to a guy stopped in the road.. I could be broke the hell down and no one would stop... The story is printed from the ausalted wemons interview ofcource.. she wouldn't say i was pissed yelling at hte guy starting shit.. I shoved his lil moped... and to be honest sitting on a moped and somone was fucking with me I would be threatend.. all they had to do would be to push me over and knock me off... these country ass girls around here 2 years older then me probly could whip my can.. nto all... I doubt though it was a normal small lady like female getting out of her car to politely ask a guy to move.. thats all I am saying.. and who is to say she didn't have anything.. im sure she owuldn't have told the reporter if she did.. lol

Now i know you were kidding and I am relieved......... HaHaHaHaaaaa! 3 teeth! Ha! Hey,Duck! Women are women, and,by and large, Men have to watch out for them. They were created as `the weaker vessel, the feminine one' as the Bible says. I can picture you as some guy tries to hit a lady in traffic,Duck. You would jump off your moped and get hold of the guy with a `death grip'! Yep! You're just like me,Duck..........admit it! don-ohio (:^D
