Sen. Ron Alting is planning to propose a new idea to control moped use at the upcoming General Assembly Session. This new idea entails how moped users will need to display a valid driver’s license and purchase motorized scooter insurance under the new legislation.
Alting commented on the damage that is frequently caused by moped drivers: " Because of the amount of wrecks we have had … it’s just good public safety. The bottom line is that a lot of wrecks involve (and) are caused by mopeds."
The proposed legislation is still being drafted, but it will include three main factors: 1) – Vehicle insurance will be required. 2) – User’s will need a driver’s license. 3) – Mopeds will need license plates.
David Payne, deputy chief of the Lafayette Police Department supports the new regulations and said how requiring license plates for mopeds would help the authorities better identify and find mopeds that have been reported stolen.
