Harry,
It really is not that tough to do.
Use another wheel as a guide to the spoke layout,
Measure the offset from the rim to the hub on each side before you start in case it is off center.
Lay the rim on a couple of widely spaced boxes and thread in the spokes for the lower side of the hub. Start by installing a pair of spkes on opposite sides of the rim to support the hub, then fill in the rest. Make sure the valve stem hole has the adjacent spokes opening away from it. This is my favorite error and it makes it hard to inflate the tire if the spokes cross right above the valve!
When you have completed the lower dish, install the upper spokes.
Snug all of the spokes evenly, then install the wheel in the frame, check the offset and adjust it, then begin tightening/loosening spokes until the rim runs true and the spokes are all tight.
If any of the spoke heads poke through the nipples, cut them off and file them smooth.
It is not as difficult as it sounds, it will take you much longer than an expert but you can do it.
