well, in our lovely city of Eau Claire, WI, fireworks that shoot into the air, or explode in any way are illegal. this means, black cats, bottle rockets, roman candles of any sort, mortars, artillery shells, missile batteries, the list goes on. basically all you have left is fountains, whipper snappers, and smoke bombs. this is what i sold at my tent in eau claire.
in chippewa falls, just north of eau claire (and home to Leinenkugel’s) fireworks of the explosive variety are legal. so naturally all the youthful and adventure-hearted people travel the 20 miles or so to go get “the good stuff.” we so happened to have some ourselves.
after a long ride out to wade’s house, and then back, we ended up at a party at one of our friend’s houses. the power was out on the block, so we were spending time on the porch just conversing and what not. noel, wade, and i had ended up at the party before the rest of the crew. when they came with dez’s van in which the fireworks were stashed, we pulled them out and proceeded to have some fun. at first we did a fountain, which to my surprise also involved a screeching whistle…or six. at the end of this show, a few roman candles were fired, and then the beast was unleashed. a “bad ass glittering candle” or something like that. as i’m lighting it, i turn to see one of eau claire’s finest in the intersection. the first shot fires, and he turns toward me. as he’s exiting the car, shots are still firing out of the beefed up roman candle. i thought the last had been done, and it was safe to put down, but as i’m dropping it (and beginning to talk to the officer) the last shot fires, sending the tube flying at the ground. of course, no one was hurt, and nothing burnt down, but now i face a $198.00 ticket.
i’ll probably be contesting, they like to drop some fines if you show up at all.
