Jay was at the Ghost Ride last year, and attended a few Moped Monday rides.

I saw Jay earlier that day. His moped was wearing the bandana I tie dyed for his graduation present. I’m so sad. It feels like all of the fun has been sucked off this tiny planet.

My prayers and thoughts go out to Graham and his family for the tragic loss. I have a 17 year old mopedder son who got me into these machines and I hope and pray that we all remain safe.
Do you think a Ghost Rider presence at the funeral would be appropriate? I’m being completely serious here. I’d like to know how it would be received before trying to organize anything.

The reason I bring it up is my brother was a big fan of Mini Coopers and got to be known around the world on their forums.

When he passed away 3 years ago (not in a car accident) there were over 50 Minis at his memorial service, and I’ve gotten to be good friends with people I’d never met before through them.
It could either be a really great thing to have a group of mopeds there, or it might be too much, given the circumstances. I’m curious what others think.

This is such a low blow. I talked with him a couple weeks ago, and he was so pumped to trick out his Puch. He’s probably the brightest individual to ever set foot in Morningstar 76. So enthused, and so kind. I don’t know how I’m going to tell my GF about this. She really liked him. To those that were close to him, hang in there.

“Failed to yield right of way,” eh? Okay, well, thanks for filling in all the gaps, only surviving witness to the accident.
When we look at bicycle accident statistics, one of the heart warming things we find is that the “cyclist at fault” rate skyrockets for accidents with fatalities (e.g. when the cyclist dies).
So, if a car turns in front of you or blows a stop sign to knock you off your bike, it’s their fault. If that same car turns in front of you or blows a stop sign to kill you, it ends up being your fault.
My conclusion is that people are lying, rotten stink-bastards.
Friends and Family of Jay
I am sorry that you lost someone close to you, and I’m a bit sorry that you have to read my next piece of advice.
Please, please, please request further investigation into this accident. The man who killed Jay might come off as just a remorseful, blameless nice guy, but sole survivors of car vs. bike accidents appear to lie most of the time.
I don’t have any details about this accident, I only have cyclist advocacy data and generalizations.
That data, and those generalizations make me angry, and make me think about how an 18 year old kid on a moped has a much much clearer view of the road than the tired driver of a Ford sedan.

jay was one of the nicest guys i’ve ever met. i met him at the ghost ride last year, and i was there before my moped, and he was the first person to talk to me, and we continued on with that tradition at monday meetings, because no one really knew either of us, so we would talk. I saw him less then a week ago in front of morningstar and talked to him about my moped shit and he talked about his, i simply can’t believe he’s gone. My heart goes out to is family and close friends.
and yeah i’m going to say it too, everyone be safe out there, you never know when to expect a car coming out of left field.

With so many more mopeds on the road now, this sort of thing is increasing. Always wear a helmet. I know his entire family rides mopeds and it may be a real nice thing for people to show up at his service with on a moped. See what the family thinks beforehand and wear your helmet there.

Moped Army, Please, Please….please…..wear the proper riding gear. Use the buddy system when riding at night whenever possible. I know it sounds lame, but it’s safer. make sure you have all your lights. One accident is one accident too many. Way too many accidents lately. I recently got hit by a car when I was on my bike, and the car did a hit and run while I was still on the ground. The car took a right turn into me. I called the police and they said they couldn’t do anything because I didn’t get the license plate number, even though there were camera’s at the intersection I got hit at. Luckily i was okay.
It seems like blame is almost always put on people on two wheels. We’re always told to be more careful, when no one ever tells cars to be more aware of who is around them.
I hope the motorist who hit him get’s some punishment. He got a few cuts on his hands, and Jay lost his life.
My thoughts go out to Jay’s family.
I met him a few times a few years back and he always seemed like a funny kid.

It is very sad to here of yet another young cycle rider taken at such an early age. My sympathy goes out to his family. I too have been involved in a bicycle + car accident in 1993. A head on collision at an intersection, where I was traveling thru a green light. In a wheelchair for a year, I was told that I would never walk again. 16 years latter, I am a riding mopeds. Be very careful out there, and always wear a helmet!
