Electric powered vehicles don’t do anything for the environment at this point in time. You’re really just deferring the pollution to the coal plant providing the power, rather than the gas. Sure, the coal plant burns cleaner than the gas engine, but you lose kinetic power in the electric transfer process.

These things won’t be environmentally efficient until the new clean coal plants/nuclear power plants start getting built, reducing their pollution, too.
