ive got an 84 with same engine. like said sounds like glow plugs.
you can test them in or out of the truck. they are basically a big resistor like above. so youre looking for continuity to ground. when they go out they go open electrically. and then the power goes to the rest of them, which makes those go sooner. so replace them all.
i got some from a guy here that were made for canadan trucks and the duty cycle is 100% so they are harder to burn out. least they cost more for some reason. i can try to get the info on them if you are interested.
as for air leaks there is a little fuel bleed valve on the fuel filter housing under the hood(looks like tire air valve). push it in quick. just fuel should come out. if its sputtering then there is some air in there. you can use this valve to purge things assuming you dont have an existing air leak. air can get in there when changing filters or if you run a tank dry. so hit the valve. if its air and fuel then crank it and hit the valve again. keep doing this until either their is no more air in the fuel or you get to thinking you have a problem elsewhere.
