Sounds like Glow Plugs. You live in a relatively warm place so it’s not the usual block heater problems of the frigid north. As you crank the engine it builds up heat from the compression and eventually that is enough to start it. The glow plugs create this heat electronically to ignite the fuel until the engine is warm enough. I’m assuming you’re familiar with the diesel enough to warm up the plugs before starting it? always gotta ask you know.
