Yeah, It’s like a special German rust that forms a protective layer around all the parts lol. I had the same reaction to a junkyard engine I bought, it looked hopeless but once I got it all cleaned up I just threw it back together and ran it. You might do well to separate the case and check the transmission for rust, or at least take the clutch cover off and see what kind of shape the fluid is in if there is any. If it’s not totally empty and there is no water you’re probably fine.
