No, peds really do go faster when they are running out of gas (as the bowl empties)
A two stroke is always a compromise between running lean to make power and running rich to lubricate. 4 strokes can run much leaner then the 2 strokes because of this.
Our peds are never at the optimum power AFR. They are at a happy medium. When you are running on the gas left over in the bowl, it runs lean for a second and you feel the burst of speed. However, keep running it at that ratio and it may be fast but it will certainly not last long.
This is also why the dirtbikers have a saying:
“it runs the best right before it seizes”
