It’s “offline” though. That’s why the scam works. You can put ANY number in because the machine will just store it for later. Only later when the machine contacts the bank and tries to clear the transaction, will it be determined that the card is no good. By then the guy and your merchandise is gone. If you had been talking to the bank yourself, they would have told you it is not approved.
