Just wanted to make sure everyone was on the same page here coming to Va for the rally this coming weekend.
In general, Richmond is pretty damn lax about mopeds, however the surrounding counties are less friendly. I wanted to post the laws out here and let you all know what to expect.
By law a moped in Va has 3 wheels or less, displacement of 50 cubic centimeters or less, has a seat that is 24 inches or more off of the ground and a top speed of no more than 35mph. Mopeds are NOT required to have pedals in Va.
You must have a working headlight and taillight to ride at night in Virginia (if you don’t, you can literally tape a flashlight to the front, and get a red LED bike light for the back)
Helmets are required as well as eye protection while riding a moped in VA. Cops will pull people for the former, most don’t know about the eye protection rule, but sunglasses, shop glasses, full face helmets, or regular glasses will be fine.
You may not have earphones in both ears while operating a moped
Although you do not need a driver’s license to operate a moped, you may not operate a moped if you have been declared a habitual offender or your license is suspended or revoked for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
No moped shall be used to carry more persons at one time than the number of persons for which it was designed or is equipped
Mopeds must obey all traffic laws.
Recently the limit for tickets was lifted in VA, so now there is no cap on the speeding fines…FYI
Lastly you need to have a picture ID while riding in Virginia. You don’t need a DL or anything, but it must have name, address, and birthdate. YOu must be 16 to ride on the streets in Va.
That should about cover it.
The only other “important” rule is that Virginia has an open container law which is heavily enforced in certain areas. We’ll be reminding folks, but if you are going to drink, do it in the areas we have set out for you.
Hope this helps. ...I know it SEEMS like a lot. It really isn’t, but every year someone says they didnt know they needed a helmet or something, and by posting this we can make them feel like an ass.
