It depends on several things. How far do you have to go, and what is the traffic like? If you can ride a bicycle there, you can ride a moped there, just a lot faster. Mopeds are not ridden in the traffic lanes, they are ridden to the far right, just like bicycles. They have a top speed of 30 mph. If that will work, and you are just looking for transportation, then a brand new Tomos Sprint is your ticket. If you want to ride with 45-55 mph traffic, you will need at least a 150cc scooter. A decent 150cc scooter like a Kymco or TGB will cost you $2500 or so, while the Sprint is only $1000. Unless you are an enthusiast/fanatic, get a new one, and keep it stock. Vintage mopeds are for people who like to work on them all the time. Nothing wrong with that. I have both. There is a lot of pleasure and satisfaction in owning/maintaining/repairing/restoring/customizing ANY old vehicle, whatever it is, IF that is your thing. And old vehicles do indeed have soul, character, and their own personality. New cars, trucks, motorcycles, and especially scooters don’t have that. They are sanitized homogenized transportation appliances, and they will get you where you want to go. IMO, about the only new vehicles that still have soul, or whatever you want to call it, are the Tomos Sprint and ST. Oh, and one more thing. Tomos oil injection systems are indeed junk, they will fail, and they will fry your top end when they do. The Sprint doesn’t have one, if you get any other Tomos, remove it ASAP. And please, oh please, I beg you, stay away from Chinese scooters. Not only are they complete rubbish, but if people would quit buying the damn things, maybe they would quit shipping them over here.
